The L3 platforms opened on 30 December 1924 under the name Diagonal-Paseo de Gracia, on the first section of the Gran Metro de Barcelona, between Catalunya and Lesseps. L5 arrived on 29 November 1969, and in 1982 the station became simply Diagonal.

It lies beneath the junction of Passeig de Gràcia and Avinguda Diagonal and forms an interchange with ProvençaES, the FGC station on Carrer de Balmes, served by L6, L7 and lines S1 and S2. Provença’s Rosselló concourse was opened in 1970 precisely to connect with the metro, and the linking passage has two moving walkways. There are seven entrances: five for L3, on Diagonal and on Passeig de Gràcia at Pau Claris and at Rambla Catalunya, and two for L5, Rosselló / FGC and Rambla Catalunya.

Frequently asked questions

When it opened in 1924, on the Gran Metro, it was called Diagonal-Paseo de Gracia, because it lies beneath the junction of the two avenues. In 1982 it was shortened to Diagonal, the same year the neighbouring FGC station changed from Provenza to Provença.

Diagonal has an official interchange with Provença, on Carrer de Balmes. You get there through a passage with two moving walkways that leads to Provença’s Rosselló concourse, opened in 1970 to connect with the metro. L6, L7 and lines S1 and S2 stop there.

Diagonal is served by Line 3 and Line 5.
From Monday to Thursday the first train leaves Diagonal at about 05:00 and the last at about 00:21, depending on the line and direction (scheduled times from the TMB GTFS timetables). On Fridays and the eve of public holidays the service runs later. On Saturday night Line 3 and Line 5 run all night long. The table above gives the times by line, direction and day.
