History
Lines 9 and 10 began as a single project in the late nineties, and work started in September 2003, on the Badalona branch in fact. The original plan was to open the section between Can Zam, Gorg and La Sagrera in 2004; problems with the tunnel-boring machines and the review of every tunnel after the Carmel collapse delayed it by several years. Work on the La Sagrera interchange began in 2004 and included platforms and passages to connect L1 and L5 with Lines 9 and 10.
L10’s first commercial service opened in April 2010 between Gorg and Bon Pastor, a 3.4-kilometre section that opened at the same time as the L9 extension to Bon Pastor. In June 2010 it reached Onze de Setembre and La Sagrera. When the southern section started running in 2018, this one became known as L10 Nord. Work on the central section that is to join the two halves resumed in 2022, and it is due to be completed in 2029.
How the service runs
At Llefià about 10 trains an hour run in each direction in the early hours of weekdays, one every 6 minutes, and about 7 for the rest of the day, one every 8 and a half. On Saturdays and Sundays the frequency is almost constant, at about 7 trains an hour. On Saturday night the line does not close, with 5 to 7 trains an hour in the small hours, and on Fridays service runs until just after 2:00. On the shared section from La Sagrera to Bon Pastor, the trains of both lines add up.
The trains
L10 uses the same Alstom 9000-series trains as L9, with fully automatic operation and no staff on board. The trains are almost 90 metres long, with five open-gangway cars and room for 960 people. The stations have glass platform doors that open at the same time as the train’s, and high-capacity lifts timed to the arrival of the trains.

The stations on the deep stretches of the tunnel were built in circular shafts, but La Salut is the exception: its shaft is rectangular. Most L9 and L10 stations are between 25 and 50 metres underground.
Because the line is unfinished and runs as two separate sections. The northern one, between Gorg and La Sagrera, opened in 2010; the southern one, from Collblanc towards the Zona Franca, started running in 2018. They will be joined when the central section is completed.
