Work began in 1971 for the new Line IV (today’s L4), created by splitting off and extending a branch of Line III that had run since 1934 between Aragón and Correos. Construction was dogged by delays, the worst being an underground explosion in November 1973 that destroyed much of the tunnelling and brought the works to a halt. The section between Jaume I and Barceloneta opened in March 1976, and the new terminus replaced Correos, 500 metres away, which was closed. Barceloneta remained the end of the line until 7 October 1977, when the line was extended to Selva de MarES.

It was built by the cut-and-cover method, and because it is so close to the sea it is the shallowest station on the metro, leaving aside those that are not underground. It was built next to the Estació de França and a commuter-rail station that has since disappeared, with a direct entrance to that station’s yard; the entrance closed on 11 June 1990, when the station was demolished, and the same day another entrance, onto Passeig de Joan de Borbó, was closed for the Ronda del Litoral works. In 2008 three lifts and new validators were installed, at a cost of €2.9 million.

Frequently asked questions

It was the terminus of the Line III branch from which Line IV was created. When Barceloneta opened in 1976, 500 metres away, it took over as the end of the line and Correos was closed.

Because it is so close to the sea. This section was built by the cut-and-cover method, with the tunnel roofed over afterwards, so, leaving aside the stations that are not underground, it is the shallowest on the Barcelona metro.

Only Line 4 stops at Barceloneta.
