The Line 1 platforms opened on 9 June 1926 with the first section of the Metro Transversal, beneath Plaça de la Universitat. In 1971-1972 the station was closed while Renfe built its tunnel between Sants and Plaça de Catalunya, which runs very close by and, in the direction of Fondo, comes right alongside L1 because of the way the metro and commuter-rail platforms are laid out at the Catalunya interchange.

The second line arrived in September 1995, when the first section of Line 2 opened; as part of those works the station was adapted for people with reduced mobility. Changes between L1 and L2 are made inside the station, and the entrances come out on Pelai, Ronda de la Universitat, Ronda de Sant Antoni and the square itself.
