Sagrada Família metro station
Line 2 and Line 5 · Zone 1 · l’Eixample
Sagrada Família station
This station is the outcome of a planning tangle that lasted almost thirty years. The Line 5 section opened in June 1970, but the platforms built for the old Line II beneath Avinguda de Gaudí were never used: in 1975 the city’s engineers discovered that its tunnel was at the same depth as that of Line V, so the two would have crossed on the same level. In 1982 a new station beneath Plaça de Gaudí was proposed, but the city council refused to destroy a square it had landscaped only a year earlier.
The solution came in 1983: the revived Line 2 would turn here towards Sant Adrià and Badalona, with new platforms beneath Carrer de la Marina, between Mallorca and Provença. The 1991 works cost 1000 million pesetas and ran three years over schedule, until the first section of L2, as far as Sant AntoniES, opened in September 1995. The L5 platforms lie beneath Provença, between Marina and Sardenya.

Frequently asked questions
They were built for the old Line II, which was supposed to cross Line V here. In 1975 it was found that the two tunnels were at the same depth and could not cross. In 1983 the idea of reviving that station was dropped and L2 got new platforms beneath Carrer de la Marina.
The line was abandoned in 1975 and taken up again in 1991, with the aim of opening it before the 1992 Olympic Games. Work on the new station beneath Marina, which cost 1000 million pesetas, ran three years late, and the section to Sant Antoni opened in 1995.
